A Steep Dive In Coal Batters Highflying ETF

White-hot coal stocks melted down last week when European spot prices for thermal coal, used to make electricity, plunged overnight, taking its biggest one-day hit in three years. The European price dropped from near $225 per ton to below $200. That dragged down U.S. prices by as much as $20.

In addition, shares of Massey Energy dropped 19% Wednesday on news it may have to pay $125 million in damages, equal to more than half its projected 2008 profits, in a lawsuit. The fourth-largest U.S. coal producer by revenue is accused of polluting groundwater near its Rawl, W.Va., plant from 1978 to at least 1987.

The 41-stock Market Vectors Coal ETF had been flying while the market floundered. Among the unleveraged equity ETFs, it sports the second-highest Relative Strength Rating, 95, next to S&P SPDRs S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production.
